Sketches:Inspiration Dresses:Building Process:Finished piece:Reflection:This piece was a big learning experience. I have found that I probably will never do dress making again. I enjoyed it but it is a lot of work. I had only used a pattern once before and it was something small so this was a big challenge. I had many problems throughout the piece. I wanted to have flowers throughout the dress that was flowed down. The problem I found that the blue roses I made didn’t go with the dress since it already had to different fabrics. So I had to compromise but making small flowers that only went around the waist adding jewels to it. There was also the problem of plettes since I had never done them before. This dress took weeks to get done because of both size and finding time to make it. I wanted to do this piece because when I had intermediate 3-D I made a dress. I wanted o be able to experiment with fashion again but with actual sewing not clay. I also had the challenge of not having glue with the jewels so I had get some type of glue for fabric that could help me apply it. I learned so much from this dress. I learned the difficulty of even making dresses gaining me respect for fashion designers. I also learned things like simplistic fashion isn’t bad.

What did I learn from this piece?: This piece was made as an idea with a group of people to design something for my school. The project opened my mind to seeing projects that could engage a space. The piece I think was hard to even come up with because each person had a different idea of what they wanted to do. I learned that working with multiple people can be somewhat hard. The piece brought me to realize that my pieces don’t have to have new part like the guitar was going to be recycled from the school. The water was going to be very different for me too because the water was going to be pouring out of the guitar down. The piece however made me realize that when putting pieces up I have to think of how will see and what they might do to it. Since it was going to be at a highschool I didn’t want it to be real water flowing down because then students wound mess with it. So I decided to think of it as maybe something like rosin. This piece made me realize that no matter what I don’t have to use the first medium that comes to mind and I should think of more than just making the piece. I also need to think of who will see it and what they might do to it.
Mask in progress:Finished piece:(coming soon)Reflection:I have learned a lot with this piece. I wanted to make a piece that was not very bright or happy. I wanted to use a medium I have never worked with before but it was difficult to really create a design that I knew would fit my face and the look of a bat. I think it has been interesting to build up and in layers to get the right form. I have done much like the before. After starting this piece I have learned I really need to watch proportions. I haven’t enjoyed this piece as much of some of the others. I think I have lost interest in it because I get very picky about the proportion even if they are slightly off. I think if I also had fur I would be much more pleased because I could figure out how I should lay it out. I do plan to come back to this piece maybe later in the semester but for now I need to get away. I learned a lot about making masks and has made me realize I may not want to do it again if it a creature. The only reason I might come back to it to do so is if I were to use a different medium.
Artist Statement: My name is Nikky Sims. I have been going to Skyline for three years. I have had an interest in art ever since I was a little child. I have so much of an interest in art that I plan to go to college for illustration. I also want to minor in writing so hopefully one day I can write my own book with my own illustrations. This semester I want to focus on trying to get even more out of my comfort zone. I want to try doing things that may be darker. The reason I say this is because most of my art is happy and pretty. The other thing I want to focus on is fashion. I want to be able to make dresses, sets/ complete outfits and shirts. The last thing I want to do is experimenting with color. I just want to play with color in a different way like having paint be bleeding.
