Floral Shoes:building process:Inspiration ideas:Finsihed project:Reflection:This piece was a big learning experience for me. I had planned for this piece to have glass in it originally but decided against it. I had wanted to focus on detail on this piece. I have always enjoyed texture but I wanted to take it to a different level than before. I decided to look back to my intermediate class with a texture tile to inspire the piece. The piece at first was going to be only one color but I have done that to many times. I decided to go with multiple color. I think the multiple color played to my advantage because there is some gloss and some that aren’t. There is also like in the roses different shades it isn’t just one red color. The piece definitely changed from the start which I have learned is good. I have always liked to be stuck to one idea and not fray away. Doing that to this piece made it so much better. I will definitely be getting into more detail for my pieces since I enjoyed this so much. There was some definite issues and struggles in this piece but I learned from. I for one thing had my heels come off and I had to glue it back together. Usually I would be kind of sad for the falling apart but I soon found it as a way of learning. I could later use it to maybe make a piece that is intentionally falling apart.

Flower dog:In progress:Finished piece:Reflection:I have learned a lot with this piece especially because I have never worked before with a specific animalistic form. I have made many drawings of things like dogs or animals but I have never used clay to make an animal like this. I think some parts a very difficult but my favorite part was making the noise because I could add as much detail as I want. I have also learned to work with glass in this piece. It was only apart of the eyes because I wanted to experiment with just a small amount of the piece. This piece I think is also different for me because I was able to make something that looks only sculptural with the animal but when you look at the back of the head it can hold something inside. I plan to add planted flowers from a flower pot into it. The piece didn’t come out the way I wanted more of because of the eyes but I now know what can happen with glass. I know that from this experience I will be working with glass again. I might do something small like a coaster.
What did I learn?: I learned that the pieces can be unique but simplistic. The bowls are all thrown on the wheel which seems simple but then there is play on the surface giving it depth. Like on the bowls with the faces we would be transferring the images on there. The middle bowls would be colorful. I think then the most unique part about it is the middle. I think it would be cool to work big with clay because of this project. We decided that the optical illusion would be a big hump mold that from straight on looks like it is simple and then from the side it has its own unique shape. I think after this piece I would like all my pieces to have a focus around making piece that can be looked at all the way around and still look really pleasing to the eye.
Artist Statement:My name is Nikky Sims. I have been going to Skyline for three years. I have had an interest in art ever since I was a little child. I have so much of an interest in art that I plan to go to college for illustration. I also want to minor in writing so hopefully one day I can write my own book with my own illustrations. This semester I want to focus on trying to get even more out of my comfort zone. I want my texture to go even more extreme. I want the ceramic pieces to be as realistic as my drawings and paintings. My other goal this semester is to become more sculptural than in years past. With it being sculptural doesn’t mean it doesn’t also have to be functional. I plan to also make things that look sculptural but can be used for something.
